In Erik Hemingway's fall 2016 course Design: Detail and Architectonics, students were tasked with developing architecture as though it were a living organism that would react to its surroundings. Zenan Shen created a floating structure tied to the ocean floor.
Alumnus Donald McKay has focused on public buildings in his career, with many centered on service, education, and culture. Constructed in 2003 and designed by his firm Nagle Hartray Architecture, the Oak Park Public Library boasts a green roof, floors made from recycled rubber, LED lighting in the parking structure, and materials selected to fit into the naturescape and reduce energy use.
