Monday, July 6, 2015

C. Kemal Nance, a lecturer with Dance at Illinois, has been teaching the dance form Umfundalai—which incorporates elements of traditional African dances, Afro-Caribbean movement, and contemporary African American rhythms into an energetic and uplifting technique—for more than 20 years. His work also centers on the experiences and perspectives of African American men, and he was integral to Krannert Art Museum's "African Gallery Community Forum II: Blackness, Gender, and Contemporary African Dance" in 2014. Nance's contributions to dance and this community were recently highlighted in a lengthy News Bureau article that included photos and a video of an Umfundalai class.
