Ping Chong—a guest artist with Dance at Illinois in January 2016—will receive a 2014 National Medal of Arts. Designed to "honor exemplary individuals and organizations that have encouraged the arts in America and offered inspiration to others through their distinguished achievement, support, or patronage," this prestigious award is given to no more than 12 recipients each year. Chong, whose work encompasses oral history projects, large-scale theatrical productions, and community-based storytelling, is being recognized for his innovation in the arts and his exploration of critical cultural and social issues. He has also earned an Obie Award for lifetime achievement and was named a USA Prudential Fellow. While on campus in January, he will create a piece for Dance at Illinois students.
