Krannert Art Museum Earns Grant for Swahili Arts Exhibition

Thursday, September 22, 2016

Slated to open in fall 2017, the Krannert Art Museum exhibition World on the Horizon: Swahili Arts across the Indian Ocean has been awarded a $325,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Co-curators Allyson Purpura with Krannert Art Museum and Prita Meier of the Department of Art History have been identifying objects from coastal eastern Africa, Oman, and islands in the Indian Ocean that exemplify the movement of people, cultures, and ideas in the region. Items on display will range from jewelry to illuminated manuscripts to architectural pieces to video works. The grant will support cleaning and mounting the objects, professional photographs, and interactive technology and publications for the exhibition. After it closes at Krannert Art Museum, the exhibition will travel to the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art and the Fowler Museum at UCLA.
