Planner Assesses Economic Impact of County Fairs

Alex Norr, a graduate student in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, recently completed an analysis in conjunction with the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs on the economic effects of the state's county fairs. He found that local spending at these events supports approximately 1,000 jobs statewide, and rural areas in particular benefit from the additional income they generate. Despite steep declines in state funding, attendance has remained steady, and fairs brought in nearly $170 million last year.
